Jabber Softphones: Basic Use Instructions

Important Notes

  • Some of these features may not be accessible on your mobile device if you answer a call outside the Jabber client screen.  If that occurs, be sure to press the Cisco Jabber icon to move the call into the Jabber screen.
  • The Jabber client will occasionally require updating.  For Windows and MacOS, you will be prompted to accept the update.  For Android and iOS, updates will occur automatically.
  •  Jabber will not work correctly if you are connected to the Library/International VPN.   If you need to use the VPN while using Jabber, please select the General Access VPN.
  •  Video service via Jabber is not currently available.  

Placing a Call 

  • Windows, macOS, iPhone
    1. Locate Search or Call box at top of screen
    2. Enter phone number in Search or Call box:  5 digits for on-campus extensions and 7+10 digits for off-campus numbers.   You may also dial campus users by entering first and/or last names.
    3. Press enter or tap the handset icon to start the call.


  • Android
    1. Tap Calls (at the bottom of the screen).      
    2. Tap the circle key pad (shown to the right).     
    3. Enter phone number. Use 5 digits for on-campus extensions and 7+10 digits for off-campus numbers.   You may also dial campus users by entering first and/or last names.
    4.  Tap the phone icon.


Ending a Call 

  • Tap the red X button at the bottom of the screen.


Receiving a Call

  • In order to receive a call, you must be logged in to the Jabber application. 
  • When you receive an incoming call, you’ll see a call window open on your device screen.
  • Tap Answer to accept the call 
    • on mobile devices, select the Cisco Jabber icon if necessary to move the call into the Jabber client screen
  • Tap Decline to forward the call to voicemail


Placing a Call on Hold

  • Answer the incoming call.
  • Click the circle icon with 3 dots at the bottom of the in-call screen
  • Select Hold.
  • Select Resume to continue the call.

Transferring a Call

  • Answer the incoming call.
  • Click the circle icon with 3 dots at the bottom of the in-call screen
  • Select Transfer.
  • Enter the phone number that you would like to transfer in the Search or Call field; press the green handset icon if necessary 
  • Select the green Transfer button (PC) or the bent-arrowed Transfer icon at the bottom of the screen (mobile client) to transfer the call.

Forwarding Calls

  • Tap upper left corner of Jabber Application, or swipe right.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Scroll to Call Forwarding.
  • Tap New Number to enter another phone number.​
  • Enter a phone number: 5 digits for on-campus extensions and 7+10 digits for off-campus numbers. 

To Stop Forwarding

  • On the Jabber home page, tap the upper left circle, or swipe right.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Click Do not forward calls.

Using Unity Voice Mail on Jabber

  • On the Jabber home page, the bottom left icon (a cassette tape) is voice mail.  If there are new messages, a red circle will overlay the icon showing the number of new messages.
  • Tap the icon and your inbox messages will be displayed in your Inbox window.
  • Tap a message and it will show in the main Jabber window, where you can listen to it, reply or forward it (to other campus users).  In the mobile version of Jabber, select the More link to access these features.
  • In the PC version of Jabber, right click on the message in the inbox window for more options, including call back, create a contact or delete the message.  In the mobile version of Jabber, select the More link to access these features.
  • You can use Jabber to empty your trash/deleted messages.  Use the dropdown at the top of the inbox window to select Deleted/Trash instead of Inbox.  In the PC version, right click on the message and select Delete Permanently from the popup menu.  In the mobile version, select the Empty Trash button at the bottom of the screen.
