REDCap
REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture), is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. Developed by Vanderbilt, REDCap's streamlined process for rapidly creating and designing projects offers a vast array of tools that can be tailored to virtually any data collection strategy. REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.
What is REDCap?
REDCap is a secure, easy to use, web-based application for building and managing data entry forms, online surveys and associated databases. You can use REDCap to rapidly develop a data collection application for your research project using:
- An online, interactive, point and click method from your web browser using the built-in Online Designer.
- An offline, bulk method by constructing a template file in Microsoft Excel and uploading into REDCap.
You can build, change, and deploy the form content as the owner of a REDCap project without having to do any programming or database development. Access to the project may also be given to outside participants, so they have the chance to contribute in any stage of its development or data collecting, whether they are affiliated with the Lehigh University or not.
REDCap enables built-in report production. By exporting the data to Excel, SAS, or a variety of analysis packages at the conclusion of the study, it is simple to examine the findings.

When should I use REDCap?
There are three main recommended options for survey creation through Lehigh: Google Forms, REDCap, and Qualtrics. Google Forms excels at shorter surveys that do not require much data manipulation. REDCap is the best solution for a longer survey where you're gathering Class 1 data or any other data that needs to be secured and protected. Qualtrics is the most robust of the three options, and is the recommended choice for any longer survey that has no data protection requirements.
Please Note
Anyone outside of Lehigh University that's trying to access our REDCap page to contribute will need to create a ticket in order to establish a username and password to access Lehigh created REDCap projects.
