Import Grades to Course Site

Importing grades through Course Site

Before importing grades from a Polleverywhere activity directly to your gradebook you will need to create a Polleverywhere activity to tie your course roster to your instance of Polleverywhere. To do go to your course and turn editing on, and then add a new activity and resource. This activity won't be used by your students, but will be a quick access link to go to the gradebook export in Polleverywhere so we suggest putting the activity in your general module and hide it from student view.

Polleverywhere allows you to import two types of grades, if you set your questions to have a correct answer you are able to import their grade for answering the questions, or if you just want a participation grade you can import the grade based on their participation during the activity.

Setting up Polleverywhere in Course Site

Name the activity Poll Everywhere and select Poll Everywhere from the Preconfigured tool drop-down list:

Once this is set you can hit the Save and return to course button at the bottom of the page. Now that this activity is created click on the Poll Everywhere link:

After signing in with your Lehigh account through the Single Sign On process you first step will be to sync your roster:

You'll see a notification telling you the syncing is in process, this process is usually quick but might not be instantaneous:

Now that your roster is imported you are ready to push grades from Polleverywhere to your gradebook.

Importing grades into Course Site

After using Polleverywhere in your class go back to your Course Site and click your Polleverywhere link:

After signing in with your Lehigh account through the Single Sign On process click Add new gradebook:

This will take you to the Reports page in Polleverywhere with the Gradebook report already selected so you just need to click continue:

From here you will select the activity to run the Gradebook report:

Note: if you are using this activity for multiple classes you can adjust the report based on the course by going to Participants and selecting the group name that matches your course name:

Once you have your report set click Export in the bottom right hand corner of the report:

Follow the prompts from the Export menu, select whether you want to import survey result grades or participation grades, you'll receive a confirmation once the process is complete:

This process might take a few minutes to finish importing into your gradebook, to check go to your Course Site and check the gradebook, you should see a manual grade item with the title of the PollEverywhere activity:

These grade items import directly into the gradebook, and not into a specific category. Once imported you can go into your gradebook setup and move the grade items into a relevant category. Also, since you cannot delete the original external tool Polleverywhere activity from the gradebook we recommend that you weigh it as 0 so it doesn't adjust your grade schema. For more information on how to change grade item weights visit our support article on weighting grades.

Manually import grades

We recommend using the Polleverywhere external tool in Course Site to import grades into your gradebook. But in-case you have an issue and can't use the tool here are the step to manually import grades to the gradebook.

Before starting the manual import process from Polleverywhere to the gradebook you will need a grade item that you want to import the grades into. If you already created the gradebook item you can continue on with this guide. If you need to create a manual check out our Manual Gradebook item guide.

Exporting Grades from Polleverywhere

To import student's grades from Polleverywhere into the Course Site gradebook, you'll first need to go to polleverywhere.com, from the main screen select Report icon from the left hand navigation:

From the report screen you will need to generate a new gradebook report on the activity that you want to export the grades from:

(Note: This process can take some time to generate a report, typically it shouldn't take more than a few minutes)

Once the gradebook report is processed and ready to view, you can download it as a .csv by selecting Download in the bottom right hand section of the report:

Preparing the .CSV for Course Site

Before importing the grades into Course Site you will need to delete two rows from the gradebook report. To do this open the .csv in Excel and delete the rows that show the averages for grades and participation:

(Note: If you receive an error from Course Site during the upload it is typically because the .CSV columns have mismatched data, first step is to go back and make sure you deleted every row after the students' grades)

Importing Grades to Course Site

After deleting those rows you can save and close Excel. Now that you have the gradebook report .csv you can go to coursesite.lehigh.edu and navigate to the course that you would like to import grades for, and then go to the gradebook.

From the Grader Report drop-down on the upper left side of the gradebook, navigate to the More section and select Import:

Drag and drop or use the file selector to import the gradebook report from Polleverywhere into the Course Site import file screen:

The rest of the options are the screen are set to the default for a .csv file, so 0nce you select the file to import you can click the blue Upload grades button at the bottom of the menu.

On the next page for importing grades you will need to map the columns from the .csv to fields with-in Course Site. You need to set the primary key for how Course Site will identify which students should receive what grade.  So In the first section Identify Users By, change the Map From field to Email, and the Map To field to Email Address:

This tells Course Site to match students from the Course Site gradebook to the email addresses in the Polleverywhere. Since we require students to log into Polleverywhere due to our licensing every student will have a Lehigh email associated with their Polleverywhere responses.

In the next section in the Course Site menu you will now map the grade items that you want imported into the gradebook, most of the fields you will keep to the default Ignore option, only selecting the grade item you want updated:

The two options you are likely to use are Grade and Participation, pending on how you want your students to be graded. Grade is the percentage that students answered correctly, which Participation is the percentage of questions that students answer. Choose Grade if you want students to be graded for how they answered or choose Participation if you want students to just receive a grade for interacting.

Once you click the Upload grades button at the bottom of the section you should receive a system message that the upload was successful:

After you click Continue you will see the students that participated in the Poll now have a grade:
