Setting User Overrides (e.g. extended time)

Instructors are able to set individual user overrides for course activities, such as quizzes, within a course.  Overrides are useful when students have to take quizzes at different times than the rest of class or when students are entitled to extended time (often via Student Support Services). Potential overrides include: setting time limits, adjusting quiz availability by date, password protecting the activity, and managing attempts.

If adding User Overrides, your activity must be visible to students (not hidden) or it will return an error message. Also, do not configure any settings under the Restrict Access section. If you are using time restrictions (eg. for when a quiz opens and closes), ensure that these have been set under the Timing section of the quiz settings.

Adding/Reviewing user overrides

First, turn on Edit mode, then click on the activity for which you want to add new or view existing user overrides for. In this example, we are using a quiz.

Click the More menu, then click overrides.

The next screen will display all of the current overrides for the quiz. If there are no overrides, you will see an User override dropdown. To add a new user override, simply click the Add user override button.

Adding a new user override

Change the settings for the appropriate students. For this example, Student Zakos is going to have the exam released during the same time as the rest of the class, but he will have 30 minutes to complete the exam as opposed to the 15 minutes that the rest of the class has.  Note: You can only set up one user override at a time, you cannot do multiple overrides at once.  Each student will have to be set up separately.

Click "Save" or "Save and enter another override."  When you are complete, you will see a table of all the current user overrides.  Students who have overrides will access the quizzes in the exact same way as other users.

If after creating your overrides, you see the error message "Student does not have the correct group or role to attempt the quiz", check your activity settings. Do not configure any settings under the Restrict Access section. If you are using time restrictions (eg. for when a quiz opens and closes), ensure that these have been set under the Timing section of the quiz settings. Similarly, your activity must be visible to students (not hidden).
