Collecting Handwritten Student Work
We support Gradescope to collect handwritten work; here is documentation on how to get started with Gradescope.
If you don't want to use Gradescope we do have a manual workaround process, this process is multi-step and isn't as intuitive as using Gradescope.
Manual Process
Given the multiple steps involved to get scanned images from a mobile devices into Course Site, we strongly recommend giving students a sample quiz and assignment so they can work out any technical issues prior to the high-stakes deliverable.
In some cases, it may be important to collect hand-written work from students during an online quiz. To accomplish this, first create a quiz to collect answers.
Quizzes do not currently allow for file uploads. One workaround is to create an assignment to collect handwritten work done during a quiz. Be sure to give students ample time in the assignment to upload their work.
Students first submit their answers to the assigned quiz.
Using a mobile device, they take pictures of their written work and upload the files to the associated assignment in Course Site.
The set up in Course Site should look like this:
It is best practice to have students save their images to pdf format before uploading to the Course Site Assignment. This will make viewing, grading, and giving feedback within Course Site easier. Images with file formats such as jpeg and heic will not save appropriately in Course Site. Student work will then show up in the Assignment Manager and faculty and click on the 'Grade' button access the file. Faculty will also be able to see a 'timestamp' as to when the work was uploaded.
