Printing FAQ

LTS Printers

Where can I print?

You can print to any available printer in any LTS Computing Site and LTS CAD Site, either from a site computer or from any laptop authenticated to Lehigh’s network and properly configured for public site printing.  Individual departments and offices may also provide access to printers (Ask first!).

Can I print from my laptop, smartphone, or tablet to an LTS Computing Site printer?

Yes, you have several options through our printing service, PaperCut. Click on the links below:

  • PaperCut Mobility Print - allows you to add and print to LTS Public Site printers from your computer, smartphone, and tablet
  • PaperCut Web Print - allows you to sign into PaperCut and upload print jobs to LTS Public site printers.

What happens if my print job fails?

If your print job fails, no deduction from your print allowance should occur. If it does, or if you think there is a discrepancy with your allowance, please see a staff member at either of the library's Circulation Desks immediately if the print job was sent to a printer within either library. If you are printing from an LTS Computing Site in another building, a valid refund request must be submitted via your PaperCut account within 48 hours of the print job. A staff member will determine if your account can be credited.

How can I request paper or toner for an LTS printer?

Toner levels are remotely monitored for LTS-supported printers, and new toner is typically ordered automatically when levels run low. Faculty or staff can use the printer supply form found at go.lehigh.edu/printersupplies

to request more paper or toner as needed.

Are there color printers I can use?

Color printing is available at the the 400 level of EWFM Library, in the Rotunda (Rm. 135) at Linderman on the main entrance level, and at the Digital Media Studio. Keep in mind that fees for color printing will be higher. You can also make color copies at the Copy Center @ Rauch or through the mountain hawk design and print center for professional printing and mailing services.

I'm not affiliated with Lehigh.  Can I print?

Not on the LTS printers, but you can use the professional printing services mentioned above.  Due to the fact that users must be authenticated to the PaperCut server with a valid Lehigh user ID, non-affiliated guests will not be able to print at LTS Computing Sites.

Printing Allowance (PaperCut)

Why does Lehigh have a print allowance?

There are two reasons Lehigh has a print allowance: (1) to reduce the significant waste associated with printing and (2) to further our collective commitment to sustainable practices at Lehigh.

What is Lehigh's print allowance?

All Lehigh students receive 75 points for use on printing per year (accounts will be reset each August sometime after the last day of Summer sessions and before the start of the Fall semester). B/W print jobs start at a cost of .05 points per side and color print jobs start at .25 points per side (with an additional discount for choosing to print double-sided). As most printing is on 8½ x11 paper on black and white printers at the public sites, this equates to approximately 1500 free prints per year.

Do graduate students get an additional allowance?

Lehigh graduate students can receive an additional 25 points worth of free printing because of their research expectations and instructional responsibilities. The initial 75 point allowance will have to be exhausted before an additional 25 points will be added to the account. The graduate student will have to come to the library circulation desk in Linderman or Fairchild-Martindale and present their Lehigh student ID in order to receive the additional amount. After the maximum amount of a 100 points allowance is exhausted, then the graduate student will have to add their own funds to replenish the account. This is a one-time gift and can be given only in the Fall or Spring semester.

Where can I have additional funds/points added to my Papercut printing account?

You can add to your printing account by visiting the Circulation Desk at the E.W. Fairchild Martindale Library.  Each account receives 75 points worth of printing per year (from August 20th to August 19th).  Graduate students may request a one time addition of an extra 25 points.

How did LTS arrive at the 75-point allowance?

Based on data gathered at Lehigh and surveying of other institutions, the 75 point print allowance will satisfy 90% of the campus community’s printing. That is, less than 10% of students print more than 1500 pages in an academic year.

What are the printing costs?

Students use .05 points per single-sided page and .08 points per double-sided page for black and white printing on 8½ x11 paper at public site printers. Lehigh is basing its 75 point print allowance on data collected at public site printers over the past two years. Refer to the list of public site printers for single print costs as well as duplexing discounts.

Are there any limits to how many copies of a document I can print?

PaperCut will allow you to print up to 50 copies of a single file at one time. You will be restricted from printing the same file again for 1 minute unless you have re-saved the document using a different filename. In addition, the page count limit for any single file is 400. The file size limit is 100MB.

How does Lehigh's print allowance compare to other colleges and universities?

Through our research, we learned that Lehigh has one of the more generous printing allowances and one of the lowest price-per-print after the allowance has been satisfied. Nearly all colleges and universities charge for printing, and many of those do not offer allowances.

My degree program requires me to print a lot.  Is it possible to get more than 75 points worth of free printing?

After the annual print allowance is exhausted, any additional print costs will be your responsibility. Please go to the circulation desk to purchase additional PaperCut points.  You also have the option of printing to a personal printer or taking advantage of the resources available through Lehigh’s Printing & Mailing Services.

How often are print allowances reset?

Each August prior to the start of the Fall semester, all Lehigh students receive a 75 point print allowance to be utilized through the following August.

I didn't use all of my printing allowance.  Can I get a cash refund?

No. If you don't use your print allowance each year, you've done your part to contribute to Lehigh's commitment to sustainability and to help save trees and money. Keep in mind: Any money you add to your PaperCut account above the 75 point allowance is also not refundable. Make sure to plan accordingly.

Can I carry a balance from year to year?

No. There is no trading, combining, or year-to-year carryovers. Credits will only be considered if it’s determined that your print job failed. Printing allowances are reset each August.

Department Printers

I'm Faculty or Staff.  How do I add a connection to a network printer to my office computer?

Follow these instructions to find the printer on the list, and install it.

Why does a University printer not appear in the printers list?

The published list of printers is maintained by LTS, and not every printer is on it (sometimes purposely). To request to have a printer be added to the published list, submit a request for assistance.

What printer models should departments purchase for use on campus?

Lehigh University LTS fully supports business-grade Hewlett Packard (HP) and Ricoh printers with wiredLAN connectivity.   Wireless printers are not recommended.

If you need help selecting a printer make and model, Submit a request for computing help.  Do not purchase a printer without consulting LTS beforehand, due to potential network and/or operating system incompatibilities.

Troubleshooting

I am trying to set up a printer on my laptop but secure AirPrint is not coming up.

Make sure you are on the "lehigh" secure wireless network rather than the public "lehigh-guest".  Go to your wireless icon and select "lehigh".

I'm trying to print a pdf but the fonts and other formatting is off. What can I do?

Some PDF files contain damaged or corrupted content – they may display online but not print correctly. To work around this problem you can try to print the pdf as an image. The option to print as image appears in a checkbox in the print dialog box. You can refer to this Adobe document Print PDF as image for more information.

Google Cloud print is not displaying Lehigh's printers for me.

Make sure you are on Lehigh's secure wireless network (Wi-Fi SSID = lehigh) and that you are logged into your Lehigh Google account (when you go to print, it will be in "change printer" selection area). If you are logged into a personal Google/Gmail account, log out of that account.

When I try to print, I get a message that the printer is busy or not responding.  What can I do?

If you connect to the network via a wireless connection, check to be sure you are on the Lehigh network (not Lehigh-guest or other non-Lehigh network).

What kind of shared printer should I purchase for my department?

For departmental groups, purchasing a Ricoh or HP Enterprise level printer with duplexing, and networking (usually the DN designation) will be the most compatible with other printing on campus.  Some models that LTS uses currently at the libraries and classroom sites are the M600 series and M553 (color).  LVBM (Lehigh Valley Business Machines) and Ricoh are local dealers that can provide service and advise on makes and models.  Please work with your LTS Computing Consultant before making a purchase so that they can confirm that the printer will work well in our environment.  HP printers can be enrolled in a program through LVBM for getting discounted supplies directly from HP.
