Is hardware repair assistance available for non-recommended brands?
Repair assistance is very limited for non-recommended brand computers. CRS Technicians are not certified to work on these brands and are therefore unable to obtain parts from the manufacturer that might be needed for a repair.
I have a non-recommended brand of computer, can I purchase parts needed for repair from a 3rd party and bring them to you for install?
This option is only available in vary rare instances, typically when the part is an SSD, ram module, or battery. If you would like to explore this option you are welcome to put in a ticket with STARS and we can discuss it with you. Please do not purchase the part and anticipate we will install it without us agreeing to do the repair first.
How do I start the repair process?
Students
For personally-owned computers students are expected to bring their computers to the STARS Desk in EWFM Library for any needed repairs.
Staff/Faculty
For Lehigh-owned computers Staff/Faculty should put in a Help ticket, and work with their Computer Consultant who will verify the issue is hardware related, and typically will pickup the computer and bring it to our Computer Repair office.
Can CRS technicians do a data backups?
Students
For personally-owned computers, students the STARS desk can attempt a backup of your profile. Depending on the issue this isn’t always possible. We suggest that if students have any files that they are concerned about losing that those files be saved in the cloud. This ensures that if there is damage to the computer, the data is safely stored elsewhere. Lehigh offers multiple options of cloud storage for students to use without any additional fee.
Staff/Faculty
Clients are expected to backup their own data prior to any work being done. It’s often the case that if a computer needs repair, there isn’t a way to retrieve the data because of the damage. We recommend you speak to the Computer Consultant for your department to discuss backup options.
Why is it necessary for some computers to be shipped out for repair?
For some hardware repairs, it is necessary to ship the computer back to the manufacturer for repair. The Lehigh recommended brands of computers stipulate that if 3 or more parts are required for a repair then the system must be sent in. Because of this stipulation any liquid damaged computers, that are have accidental damage coverage are sent in for repair to the manufacturer. Also, if the computer has a "Depot Repair" warranty, the terms of the warranty require that it be sent out. In all cases CRS technicians will make the necessary shipping arrangements.
Does an AppleCare+ Warranty cover accidental damage?
