Intern teacher orientation - Thursday, 12 Jan

 Session 1 - Monday, 16 Jan

Before class

  • Get a copy of the textbook, if you can
  • Log into CourseSite and explore the course documents, if you can
  • Bring to class: An artifact to represent where you are in your teaching process at the moment

  • Looking at portfolios, rubrics
  • One thing I would have added to the orientation: You're entering a profession, and its has rules/standards but also lots of judgment calls. See for yourself. 
  • "Portrait of Practice" photo #1. I'll print the photos and you'll add them to your page – see the template here, see my sample.
  • Intro to action research
  • Closure

After class

  • Reading: Start working on Parsons & Brown
  • Assignments 
    • If your CourseSite profile doesn't feature a picture, please add one!
    • Do a WTL post
    • Work on reading quizzes
    • Check out action research samples
    • Work on your portfolio
    • Add your portfolio URL to the list.
    • If you didn't do your photo this week, bring your artifact to class next week!!
    • Complete the "Portrait of Practice" page (descrip, etc. – see examples above), print it out and bring it to class next week.

 Session 2 - Monday, 23 Jan

Before class

  • Get textbook, start reading; take reading quizzes as you complete chapters
  • In CourseSite...
    • Update your profile by adding a picture, if you haven't done so already
    • Start your WTL thread
    • Action research: Look at samples, start thinking about your own possible topics
    • Complete the 'Portrait of Practice' page (it's down toward the bottom of the main page in CourseSite, under the 'Misc. class materials' header), print it out, bring it to class on Monday. I'll have the photos printed out for you to add to the page.
    • Look at the rubric, etc., for your portfolio
  • Add your portfolio URL to the class list of portfolios. (Just scroll to the bottom and click "Edit")

During class (ppt)

  • Beginning-of-semester Portrait of Practice–select your picture, post it up!
  • First week: Share best/worst thing that happened.
  • Agenda-setting: I'll monitor the topics of concern in the WTL threads and respond as best I can; if you want to schedule a live discussion of something, use this form to make a request.
  • Portfolios
    • Find a partner, look at rubric together
    • Evaluate one another's portfolio (find URLs here); post your feedback in THEIR writing-to-learn thread
    • Now try to make one change / edit to your portfolio
    • Questions? Put them in the 'Help me!' forum
    • Looking ahead: Our next deadline on the portfolio process will be...
  • Action research discussion
  • Housekeeping: How are things coming with the textbook? Reading quizzes? Don't forget about the Help Me! forum.

After class

  • Reading--keep chugging on the textbook! Take your reading quizzes!
  • Assignments: 
    • WTL – If you're stuck for a topic, I'm curious to know if any of your schools are doing something to observe the lunar New Year
    • Work on revising / updating portfolio
    • Action research
      • Brainstorm TWO or more topics, post them in your WTL thread. 
      • RESPOND to at least one classmate's action research topic posting
      • (If you feel ready) WRITE UP AND SUBMIT your topic for your action research project. This is the first step of your AR process. The topic is non-binding; you can change it later. 

 Session 3 - Monday, 30 Jan

Before class

  • Work through Brown & Parsons, take reading quizzes
  • Work on portfolio

During class (ppt)

  • 4:00-5:30 = Middle/secondary
  • 5:30-7:00 = Elementary
  • (You can of course feel free to come to the 'wrong' section)

After class

  • Reading -- keep chugging with Parsons & Brown, do reading quizzes as you go
  • Assignments -- WTL, look through your portfolio, submit your action research topic statement and first shot at your research questions. 

 Session 4 - Monday, 6 Feb

Before class

  • Keep working through Parsons & Brown and taking the reading quizzes -- I'd like you to be done after this week!

During class

  • 4:00-5:30 = Elementary
  • 5:30-7:00 = Middle/Secondary
  • (You can of course feel free to come to the 'wrong' section)
  • ( Bring your textbook!!)

After class

  • Reading – complete reading quizzes!
  • Assignments

 Session 5 - Monday, 13 Feb

Before class

  • Complete reading quizzes!!
  • Work on portfolio
  • Submit (if you haven't already) your action research project topic and (initial) research questions.

During class

  • 3:30-4:30 = BASD elementary interns (since you missed class last week...)
  • 4:30-5:30 = working with quantitative data
  • 5:30-7:00 = working with qualitative data

After class

  • Assignments
    • work on portfolio
    • keep moving forward with your action research project: topic & RQs (if you haven't done it already), annotated bibliography, UTOS and revised RQs, etc.
