Google Meet is an online conferencing tool that is available to anyone at Lehigh.
The preferred tool is Zoom.
However, there are some circumstances in which you might want to consider using google meet. It is a good potential back-up, allows for individuals to activate live closed captions and meeting recordings are saved to your google drive. If you are someone who already uses Google tools, then Google Meet might be more convenient for you.
How to decide?
Basic Features for Google for Education Accounts:
- Any one who joins your Google Meet must have a google account.
- You can record directly to Google Drive but the meeting will only be available for 30 days after which it will expire.
- Jamboard integration
- Background Blur
- Tiled Layout up to 49
There are some new updates to Google Meet (which require an account upgrade) that make it more comparable to Zoom.
Upgraded features for Google Enterprise Accounts:
1. Attendance tracking:
Organizers of G Suite Enterprise for Education meetings will now receive an attendance report via email once the meeting is over. Attendance reports will be generated for web or mobile meetings with at least five (and no more than 250) participants and will contain the following information: Participant’s name, Participant’s email, Length of time a participant was on the call.
2. Breakout Rooms:
You can now use breakout rooms to divide participants into smaller groups during video calls in Meet. Participants can then easily rejoin the original meeting following their smaller group discussion.
3. Q&A:
A structured way for students to ask questions on class content and get answers from instructors. Participants can submit and upvote their favorite questions without disrupting the flow of the call.
4. Polls:
Instructors can use Polls to identify topics that need more discussion or test understanding of the meeting content. With Polls in Meet, moderators can set up multiple questions, viewable to only them, and launch the poll when it’s timely during the call.
5. Noise Cancellation
6. Permanent recordings of meetings to your Google drive.
Lehigh has limited Enterprise licenses available for faculty. Google Enterprise accounts also allow for unlimited originality reports in Google Assignments. To learn more about upgrading your account, please contact your IT consultant.
