You can also embed most Google files in your course site using the "Google Embed Tool". The Google Assignments file embed tool automatically manages file sharing permissions so the course can access and view the files. Why would this be useful? For instance, if you would like to link your syllabus that you created in a google doc each semester and update as the semester progresses, you can. Students will then not have to download an updated version, but rather just click on a link to your embedded syllabus and not have to leave your course site. If you embed a google file in your course and make changes, then your embedded file in your course is also updated.
PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to preserve your files (such a syllabus) "as is" each semester and keep preserved copies, then you might NOT want to use the Google File Embed Tool. You may choose to add your google file as a URL link instead.
Instructors can embed and share most files that you can store in Google Drive, including:
- Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides
- Microsoft®️ Word®️, Excel®️, or PowerPoint®️
- Image files
- Text files
- Video files (WEBM, MPEG4, 3GPP, MOV, AVI, MPEGPS, WMV, FLV, OGG)
- Audio formats (MP3, MPEG, WAV, .ogg, .opus)
Google Forms
Google File embed does not currently work with Google Forms – but here is a workaround.
Proper Use of Media Files
In order to share media files that you did not author (such as video) in your courses, you must obtain proper copyright permissions. To verify that you have the rights for non-original video, please complete a streaming video request. If you have questions, please contact Dan Huang, our acquisitions librarian, directly.
PLEASE NOTE: Panopto is still the preferred tool to use for lecture capture.
