When instructors make the following changes, they will create effective exams that also diminish the likelihood that students will violate academic integrity principles.
- When possible, replace infrequent high-stakes exams with more frequent lower-stakes quizzes that build on one another.
- When possible, replace multiple choice questions with short answer or essay or project-based assessments.
- For quizzes that are primarily intended to promote learning (i.e., formative assessment) rather than assess learning (i.e., summative assessment), allow students to take quizzes multiple times.
- Remind students frequently of the importance of maintaining academic integrity. Feel free to reference or draw on language from our Remote Learning page: "Lehigh’s academic integrity standards remain the same whether you are learning online or in a face-to-face class. That means that you may not receive unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations, and that you may not submit the work of another as your own in any assignment. Review the Student Senate's Statement on Academic Integrity and Article III of Lehigh’s Code of Conduct. If you have any questions about Academic Integrity as it applies to our online course, ask."

When you create online assessments, the following practices will further diminish the likelihood of Academic Integrity violations.
Time your Quiz
A general rule for how much time is to answer the question yourself, time it, and then multiply the time it took by three for your students.

Create Essay and Short Answer Questions
These Question types allows students to write on a particular subject and must be manually graded.
You must view Quiz submissions to grade your open-ended questions.
Create Simple or Multichoice Calculated Questions
Calculated questions offer a way to create individual numerical questions by the use of wildcards that are substituted with individual values when the quiz is taken.
