Benefits of a Password Manager:
- Store many more passwords than most people can remember in a secure location.
- Generate strong passwords that a human would be unlikely to guess and that computers have a harder time cracking.
- Store password-retrieval details (like account information and responses to security questions) safely.
- Share passwords with family or coworkers as appropriate or necessary.
- Protect all of your passwords with a single master password.
- Get alerts about account information breaches.
What is Keeper Password Manager
Keeper is a password management tool that allows you to keep track of all of your work passwords in a secure vault and access them with a single password. Having to only remember a single password, allows you to create and use really strong and complex passwords for each and every account you have
Why did we switch from LastPass to Keeper?
After several LastPass data breaches of encrypted customer password vaults, Library and Technology Services has decided to suspend new Lehigh LastPass enrollment on January 3rd, 2023, and then later decided to switch to a more robust Password manager.
Getting started
Keeper has an app for computer and mobile devices and a browser extension that Kepper refers to it as KeeperFill browser extensionfor use on the web. The Desktop application will allow users to transfer vaults from LastPass without having to import/export CSV files.
- Enroll in Lehigh Keeper on Lehigh's Enrollment Portal
Faculty and staff must enroll in Keeper through Lehigh's Keeper Self-Enrollment Portal.
On the web page, click on the 'Enroll' button.
This will initiate the provisioning process, which will result in an email invitation to join Keeper password manager, but can take up to two hours. - Account setup
Once you receive the invitation email click on the button "Setup your account now!", this process will open a new tab in your browser and start the account creation. Keep the default and click Next.
The process will take a few seconds and a new tab will open with your vault, at this point your vault will be empty. On the right side, a smaller popup window will appear, this is to help you continue the process, you can close this popup window by clicking on the X (on the upper-right) or click “later” (on the bottom right) so you will see it again next login.
If you don’t have the browser extension installed, you will have the option to install it by clicking on the radio button “Install Browser Extension” and then “Install Now”, again a new tab will open, click on Get or Install the extension, (depending on your browser)
At this point, you finished creating your account and installing the Keeper password manager.
If you don’t have a Lehigh LastPass business account:
You are done, close the pop-up window in Any and start using your password manager by adding new items (passwords, folders, etc…)
Check out this guide on how to
https://docs.keeper.io/user-guides/
If you have a LastPass business account
You are also done, close the pop-up window in Any but if any. Now you need to migrate your vault from LastPass to Keeper.
Download & Install
- Download the desktop app from Keeper website at https://www.keepersecurity.com/download.html
- Click the Download button under Desktop App
- WINDOWS users: Click on the file you just downloaded (“KeeperPasswordManager.appinstaller”), click install and check Launch when ready box, and follow the prompts,
Mac users:
Go to the Downloads folder (or whatever location you download files to) and click KeeperSetup.dmg to open.
A small Keeper Password Manager window opens
Click the Open button when prompted with: "Keeper Password Manager.app is an application downloaded from the Internet...?"
Keeper Password Manager & Digital Vault window opens.
The Keeper app will launch after installation, click login, enter your email address if it's not already there, and click next.
The default browser will open a small window on the side, enter your Lehigh credentials and click login you will go through the Duo process. The last step in this process is to approve the device you are working on, since this is the first time you are opening the app on this device, you need to choose one of the two methods: Keeper Push (Send a push notification to your approved device) or Admin Approval (Request your admin to approve this device if you choose the second option, you need to inform the Keeper administrator of your request.
The desktop app is very similar to the web browser, you will also get the popup window on the right side to help you continue the Keeper setup.
LastPass Vault migration
On the popup window click on the Import Passwords radio button [if the popup window is not available, click on your shown email address on the upper right corner of the app, Settings]
and then on the button, Import/Import Now, another window will open with the list of password managers, choose LastPass, enter your Lehigh email address and check Include shard folder box.
Again you will go through the SSO/Duo login process. After login a new window will open with the list of items in LastPass vault, click on Import Button, and finally, another popup window will appear showing the number of passwords imported, click OK and you are done! Close the open popup windows and check that your vault has been transferred correctly.
