FAQ: LUapps

The information on this page refers to LUapps powered by Apporto. For information about administrative/banner LUapps powered by AWS AppStream, visit: FAQ: Administrative LUapps via AWS AppStream.

LUapps provides access to a wide array of software applications via Apporto. All you need is an internet-capable computer. Frequently asked questions are below.

What is LUapps powered by Apporto?

LUapps uses Apporto to provide Lehigh students, faculty, and staff with virtualized software for academic and administrative productivity. The LUapps Apporto environment went live in January 2026. Before that, LUapps used AWS Appstream.

How do I open and save my files?

You can save files directly to your virtual desktop, documents, or downloads folders. Files saved to the virtual Downloads, Documents, or Desktop folders will remain there for 2 years. You can save up to 5GB of data in your virtual environment. For a larger storage capacity, consider using a cloud drive such as Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox. These cloud storage services can be seamlessly integrated with LUapps using Cloud Mounter.

Some programs may have issues updating or "autosaving" files stored directly in Cloud drives, and large files may take longer to load or save. For the best performance and to avoid application errors, always move your files from the cloud drive to the virtual Desktop or Documents folder before you start working. Once you are finished, save the updated version back to your cloud drive. Note that you can also use the web browser in LUapps to access Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive in their native cloud environments.

Other LUapps features

How can I make the desktop bigger?

LUapps allows you to work in multiple monitors (up to three). You can move each tab to a different monitor and resize as needed. The LUapps desktop spans across the tabs. Applications may be dragged from one tab/monitor to the other.  For example, you may open email on one monitor while working on a presentation in the other monitor.

To open multiple monitors

  1. Click Second Monitor image-20251229-213313.png in the menu bar to open a second (or third) browser tab. This may take a few seconds.

  2. Drag the new browser tab to another monitor and re-size as needed.  To maximize your screen real estate you can put each tab into full screen mode.

Position Applications

You may move applications from one browser tab to another. Simply drag the app across the active browser tab. When it begins to appear in the second browser tab, move your cursor to that tab, select the app, and finish dragging the app over.

Note: If you share screens with another user or participate in the Virtual Classroom, only your 1st monitor will be shared.

Exit Multiple Monitors

To stop working in multiple monitors, click x to close the second (or third) browser tab.

Screensharing

LUapps enables you to share your screen with other users so you can collaborate. You may collaborate in real time with the other user (synchronous) or send a link that the other user can access at a later time (asynchronous). For more information, review Collaborating with Other Users in Apporto.

Copying & Pasting

Sometimes you may want to copy and paste content from your computer to the LUapps desktop, or vice versa. You can do this using the copy and paste menus or keyboard shortcuts, for example, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. For more information, review Copying & Pasting in Apporto.

Session life

How long can I stay logged into LUapps?

The LUapps Apporto environment allows for 8 hours of continuous use. You’ll receive a warning 5 minutes before your session ends, allowing you to save any work.

How long can my LUapps session be idle before it is disconnected?

After 60 minutes of inactivity, you’ll be automatically logged out of the LUapps Apporto environment. After 45 minutes of inactivity, you’ll receive notifications every 5 minutes warning you that you’ll be logged out if your session remains inactive.

Hint: Make sure notifications are on for your local computer’s browser so that you’ll see these notifications.

I'm a faculty member teaching a course using LUapps. How can I ensure a smooth experience for my students?

See LUapps Course Site LTI Integration for more information about how to integrate your course with LUapps and Using Course Site in LUapps for more helpful tips.

Faculty are strongly encouraged to contact LTS at least ten (10) days in advance if a large group of students will need simultaneous access to LUapps for a lab, class, etc. This will allow sufficient resources to be provisioned in advance and best improve the student experience. Submit a request or contact the LTS Help Desk for assistance. Faculty can submit a request for JupyterLab/RStudio environments via this form.

Troubleshooting

Which browser should I use to access LUapps?

In order to use the LUapps Apporto environment, all you need is a computer with a web browser and a reasonably fast internet connection. Google Chrome is the recommended browser, while Firefox is NOT recommended. For more information, visit: Apporto Required Environment.

Why is LUapps sometimes slower than a physical computer?

LUapps provides great convenience by providing access to over 50 academic applications remotely. LUapps supplements our on-campus labs to provide anytime, anywhere access. The highest level of performance, which may be needed for high-intensity graphic or computational needs, can be experienced by visiting a physical computer lab in-person. A list of computer labs is available at https://ltsfacilities.lehigh.edu/room-type/lts-computing-site, and several have 24/7 student access. LUapps performance is also subject to general Internet bandwidth congestion/latency/etc. which may be particularly noticeable when connecting from abroad.

For compute-intensive applications, how can I maximize performance?

To maximize performance, you can follow these steps:

  1. Save the files you are working on to the LUapps virtual Desktop.

  2. For best results, when you are finished working, move those files to a permanent storage location (local computer drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.).

What if I get a "There aren't any more licenses available right now, please try again later" message?

If, upon sign-in, you see the message "There aren't any more licenses available right now, please try again later," it means that at the time you tried to sign in, all available LUapps sessions were currently in use by other users. This is the equivalent of walking into a physical computer lab and finding all computers currently in use. If this occurs, please try again later. Faculty are strongly encouraged to contact LTS in advance if a large group of students (ten or more) will need simultaneous access to LUapps for a lab, class, etc. This will allow sufficient resources to be provisioned in advance and best improve the student experience. Submit a request or contact the LTS Help Desk for assistance.

What should I do if LUapps isn’t working for me?

Review the troubleshooting tips listed here: Troubleshooting in Apporto. You can also submit a request or contact the LTS Help Desk for assistance.
