Live Captions in Zoom

Zoom meetings can now include live, machine-generated captions. The meeting host can enable these captions and meeting attendees can toggle sub-titles on and off as needed.

From the Zoom support web site:

"Live transcription currently only supports English and the accuracy of the feature depends on many variables, such as but not limited to:

Background noise
Volume and clarity of the speaker’s voice
Speaker's proficiency with the English language
Lexicons and dialects specific to a geography or community

Because of these limitations, if you are required to use speech-to-text support for any compliance or accessibility needs in your meetings and webinars, we do recommend using a manual captioner or service that may be able to guarantee a specific accuracy."

To enable "Live Transcription" on your account:

  • Sign in to lehigh.zoom.us using your personal Lehigh account or 'in' account credentials
  • In the navigation panel in the left margin of your Zoom homepage, click 'Settings.'
  • Click the 'Meeting' tab.
  • In the 'In Meeting (Advanced)' settings area, verify that 'Closed captioning' is enabled.
    • If the setting is disabled, click the toggle to enable it. If a verification dialog displays, click Turn On to verify the change.
  • Check the option to 'Enable live transcription service to show transcript on the side panel in-meeting.'
  • You can also determine if meeting participants can save captions or a transcript to a file. 'Save Captions' is turned on by default.

To turn on transcription in meetings you host:

  • Locate the 'Live Transcript' button on your toolbar. You may need to resize your Zoom window or click on the 'More' button if the 'Live Transcript' button is not displayed.
  • Click on 'Enable Auto-Transcription'

Once enabled, you will see the live captions below your video.

Meeting participant will see a notification that a live transcript is available, but meeting participants must click the 'CC' button to view the live transcription. See below.

If enabled by the meeting host, you can turn on transcription in meetings you attend:

  • Click the “CC Live Transcript” button in the tool bar at the bottom of the Zoom meeting window.

  • Click one of the following:

  • Show Subtitles – Displays captioning on the bottom of the video. You can also select Hide Subtitle once subtitles are selected to hide them.

  • View Full Transcript – Opens a panel/pop-up and displays captions in real-time with both the speaker’s name and time stamp. In that pop-up, participants will also see a button to save the transcript (this button might not be available if the host has disabled this functionality). If enabled, click Save Transcript. A copy of the transcript as a .txt file will be downloaded to your machine.

Note: Transcripts save up to the moment when you click Save Transcript. If you click Save Transcript multiple times throughout the event, it will overwrite/update the existing file. We recommend clicking Save Transcript just before the meeting ends to ensure you have the transcript from the entire meeting. There is no option to auto-save these transcripts.
