Creating a Page in Confluence

Many Lehigh users will have the need to create documentation in Confluence, and as intuitive as it may seem, there are a number of small steps required to get started.  First you'll need a license to use confluence, so submit a Jira request to have a license assigned to your account.

Then follow the steps below to enter the world of Confluence:

1.  Navigate to https://lehigh.atlassian.net/wiki, and click on the "->]" Sign In link on the top right of the page, and log in with your Lehigh credentials.

2.  Next, navigate to the page under which you'd like your new page to appear, for example, under the 'Software' page, in the LTS Knowledge Base.

3.  Next, click the big blue 'Create' button.

Note:  The small ellipsis button right next to 'Create' allows you to choose pre-formatted templates with example items already added.  The base document obtained from 'Create' can be edited to contain all of the same items, as needed.

4.  Add a title to your document.  Be sure to include all terms needed to differentiate your document from others in Lehigh's Confluence system. (e.g. "Installing R on Windows" instead of  "Installation Instructions").

5.  Add content to your document.  Be sure to familiarize yourself with the "Page Layout" tool in the toolbar, which allows for the creation of layout sections within a Confluence doucment, and the "Add Content" button, and the many 'macros' which add significant functionality to Confluence pages, including the 'Children Macro' under 'Other Macros'.

6.  In the LTS Knowledge Base workspace, for example, the page tree is displayed on the left, and shows the currently viewed page and the branches from which it springs.

7.  When you're finished with your document, click the 'Publish' button at the bottom right.

8.  Don't forget, once you've published your page, to click on the 'labels' button at the bottom right, and add important additional terms that might aid searchers in finding your document.  Some labels may even affect where your document maight be listed -- such as pages with 'Content by Label' macros.
