Windows: Run Operating System Updates Manually

While Microsoft and LTS works to automate the process of installing Windows' operating system updates as much as possible, some aspects, like re-starting the computer to finish the installation are best done by the user, and if you'd like to ensure that your system is fully up-to-date, and won't need to restart itself, you can trigger these updates manually, and get them out of the way.

1. Click Start, and then click on the 'Settings' icon (Gear).

2. In the Settings window, click on 'Update and Security'.

3. In the Windows Update window, what you see will vary depending on what updates are available, which you have installed, and what the next needed step is. Follow the instructions on the screen.

You may need to scroll to the bottom of the list of updates, and click 'Install'.
Updates will have to be downloaded first, and then installed. You can watch this process, or let it run in the background.
After some number of updates have run, you may need to click 'Restart'.

After you've restarted, you should check back to see if there are further updates. Frequently, this is an iterative process -- one set of updates enables you to move to the next.

When you click the 'Check for Updates' button, and receive the message 'No Updates Available' you're done.
