Editing auto-created captions/transcripts in Zoom

Lehigh's instance of Zoom is configured, by default, to automatically produce a machine-created audio transcript for Zoom sessions recorded to the cloud only.

NOTE: While we always recommend using automatic machine-generated captions/transcripts, they are not accurate enough to meet the standard of 95% accuracy for an individual with an official accommodation request (ADA Section 504/8). If you have an individual with an official accommodation, please contact the Office of Disability Support Services or submit a ticket to the Instructional Technology team.

Access/Edit the machine-generated audio transcript for your Zoom cloud recording

Once your cloud recording has finished processing you will receive emails indicating that both your video and your audio transcript are ready. Log in to Zoom via https://lehigh.zoom.us as you normally would.

Once you are logged in, on the left-hand sidebar under Personal click Recordings.

Click the recording you want to edit.

On the page that opens for the specific recording you selected, be sure to verify that the audio transcript has been generated. Most of the time, the video itself is ready before the transcript. To the right of the audio transcript link (and all the other links as well) will be the file size of the respective component. In some cases, if there are any errors generating the audio transcript, in place of the file size it will actually say Unable to transcribe.

To launch the editor, click the Play icon.

When the editor opens, you will see the main video feed in the main content region and the editor will appear in the right sidebar. You will notice that it already has time markers as well as indicating who is speaking. If you notice a particular caption requires editing, simply mouse over that specific caption you want to edit, and click the pencil icon that appears to the right of the caption text.

Once you have made your change, click Save.

Your changes will be saved and you can either close the editor window or continue editing.

You can also download the transcript as a .vtt file. You may want to do this if you plan to download the video and upload it to another streaming platform that supports captioning.
