Turnitin FAQ
This page documents common issues, gotchas, and less obvious features to help you quickly troubleshoot or discover functionality that may not be immediately apparent.
Request a submission deletion
To request a permanent paper deletion in Course Site:
Open the Assignment: Enter your Moodle course and click the Turnitin LTI 1.3 activity.
Locate the Submission: In the Assignment Dashboard, find the student’s name.
Initiate Deletion: Click the Trash Can icon (or the three-dot "Options" menu) next to the submission.
Select Deletion Type: Choose "Request Permanent Deletion" (Note: "Remove from Inbox" only hides it from your view).
Submit Request: Select a reason for deletion and confirm.
Important: This action sends a request to your Institutional Turnitin Administrator. The paper remains in the database until they manually approve the deletion from their admin console.
Steps to Enable Resubmission
Access the Assignment: Open the Turnitin LTI 1.3 assignment in your course.
Open Settings: On the Assignment Dashboard, click the Gear Icon (Settings) in the top right corner.
Find Similarity Settings: Scroll down and click on Optional Settings to expand the menu.
Change Report Generation: Look for the dropdown menu labeled "Generate Similarity Reports for student submissions". To allow resubmissions, select one of these two options:
Immediately (can resubmit until due date): Students can resubmit as many times as they like until the deadline. (Recommended for formative feedback).
On due date (can resubmit until due date): Students can resubmit multiple times, but no reports are generated for anyone until the deadline passes.
Save: Scroll to the bottom and click Submit.
Critical Details
The 3-Attempt Rule: Students can resubmit and see a new Similarity Report immediately for their first three attempts. Starting with the fourth attempt, Turnitin enforces a 24-hour delay before a new report is generated.
Overwriting: Each resubmission overwrites the previous one. Only the most recent paper and its report will be visible to you and the student.
Post-Due Date: Resubmissions are generally blocked once the due date passes, unless you manually grant an extension to an individual student via the "three dots" menu next to their name in the dashboard.
