Google Gemini (Standalone)
Gemini is an LLM (large Language model) that can generate predictive text, images, audio, and video. You may choose to use Gemini to assist with research, provide personalized study materials, and offer feedback on writing.
Our use of Google's Gemini core service is governed by our campus agreement with Google. Gemini operates within a secure, privacy-focused environment, meaning Lehigh data is not used to train the general AI models or reviewed by humans, with added data protection for EDU accounts.
Simply put, Google is not allowed to use your prompts or Lehigh data to train its AI models.
You can choose to let Gemini connect to your Lehigh Google Drive. If you turn this feature on, here is how it actually works:
What the AI can see: Gemini can read your files, such as back-ups of student work submitted to Google Assignments and any files that others have shared with you.
No new sharing: Turning this on does not give other Lehigh students or staff access to your private files.
Google Gemini comes in a few variations. Google Gemini (standalone) is a chat interface similar to OpenAI ChatGPT and Anthropic Claude where you can ask questions, upload documents for summaries, create content, and generate images. Gemini (standalone) is available at gemini.google.com.
All Lehigh faculty, staff, and students have access to Gemini as a part of our Google licenses. Students, faculty, and staff can use Gemini by going to https://gemini.google.com/ or going to the available apps listed in your Lehigh Google account.
Once in Gemini, you can choose models to test including Pro version, try the Deep Research tool (under the plus icon), upload files (including videos and images), open the canvas (under the plus icon) to see your prompting window and the output (helpful with coding), and talk to Gemini. You will also have access to Gems, which allows you to save and reuse prompts.

Additional Lehigh AI Resources
Additionally, Faculty and Staff can also experiment with Google AI Pro’s (Gemini) deep integration into core Google Workspace apps (like Docs, Gmail, Slides, Meet, and Classroom) with much higher limits for research, file uploads, and study tools for an additional licensing fee.
