With the Elgato Cam Link 4K, you could turn any video camcorder or DSLR into a nice looking web camera.
All that is required is the Elgato Cam Link, the camera, and a HDMI cable that fits the specifications of your camera. You will need a micro /HDMI, mini HDMI to HDMI , or a full sized HDMI to HDMI cable.
The Elgato features 1080p Full HD quality at 60 frames per second as well as 4K video at up to 30fps.
It's compatible with both PC & Mac computers.
Here is how you can test if your camera is compatible in advance:
- In order to be compatible with your camera your camera must have either a micro HDMI, mini HDMI, or full size HDMI output. A lot of times your camera will come with the necessary cable, but you may need to purchase a longer cable depending on your setup.
- The next thing to test is if your camera outputs a clean HDMI signal. This means a signal that doesn't have all of the onscreen indicators. For example you may not want the battery life showing up on your video. Many cameras have the option to hide this display information in the camera settings so you will only see the video itself.
- Finally, the camera HDMI output port needs to not have no HDCP protection. Most cameras don't so this shouldn't be an issue.
This video from Elgato details the steps you could take by connecting your camera to an HDTV in order to test your equipment to make sure it's compatible with the Eglato Cam Link 4K.
